Continuing in this inductive manner would imply the ridiculous conclusion that .000...001 is equal to .000...002 which is equal to .000...003 which is equal to ... .9999999! However, .000....0001 clearly does not equal .999... Therefore, .999... does not equal 1. QED. If this bet was made to settle a a debate about mathematical theory, then I would even argue that .999 is not theoretically equal to one. One and zero are simply infinitely close in value to each other. |
